Undergraduate Research Experience
If you plan to apply to graduate school, there is probably no better way to strengthen your application than by getting undergraduate research experience. Ph.D. programs, for example, are typically research-focused, so they will be looking for applicants with first-hand knowledge of how a research lab runs. Most undergraduates in our lab choose to get course credit for their work by enrolling in Psyc 366. In exchange for 3 course credits, students commit to a weekly schedule of about 9-10 hours per week in the lab. Students can also commit to fewer hours per week in exchange for fewer course credits, and some students have also opted simply to volunteer their time. Students in our lab are encouraged from the start to begin developing their own independent ideas and to immerse themselves in the research experience. For example, in addition to running experiments that are already ongoing, students in our lab have challenged themselves to learn how to design, program, and run their own experiments, sometimes culminating in a presentation at a professional conference or a manuscript submitted for publication. Students pursuing such independent work are encouraged to enroll in Psyc 466, Psyc 468, or to conduct a Senior Thesis. Note that students must have completed at least one semester of Psyc 366 (or to have volunteered for at least one semester) in the lab in order to enroll in one of these more advanced options. Getting Involved If you are interested in getting involved in the Motivated Attention & Perception Lab, please send an e-mail with the subject "Lab Research" to Dr. Steve Most (most@psych.udel.edu). In this e-mail, please provide the name and contact information for at least one reference, describe any previous research experience you might have, and describe why you are interested in the work in our lab. Space is limited, so please contact Dr. Most as early as possible. |
